personnel consulting
hhfe asked:

A timeless lesson on how consultants can make a difference for an organization.

Last week, we took some friends out to a new restaurant, and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket.

It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I noticed he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket.

Then I looked around saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets.

When the waiter came back to serve our soup I asked, “Why the spoon?”

“Well, “he explained, “the restaurant’s owners hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.”

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he was able to replace it with his spare. “I’ll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.”

I was impressed. I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter’s fly. Looking around, I noticed that all the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So before he walked off, I asked the waiter, “Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?”

“Oh certainly!” Then he lowered his voice. “Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also found out that we can save time in the restroom. By tying this string to the tip of you know what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39 percent.

I asked “After you get it out, how do you put it back?”

“Well,” he whispered, “I don’t know about the others, but I use the spoon.”

Samia asked:

The DORS program used to have a database for retiring or exiting military personnel to post their resumes and then employers could search for people with specific skills within the database.

Does anyone know if this kind of searchable database still exists? I need to find a US Navy nuclear trained mechanic for a job opening in California.

thanks in advance!

Michael S asked:

A relative of mine is a chef and called me today wondering out loud about what it would take to sign on as a chef for U.S. troops in Iraq. He’s got top-notch training but is between jobs at the moment and thought that this might be an opportunity for a change of scenery while putting his skills to use. Any ideas on how he could get started with something like this?

No political commentary, please. Just answer the question.

hello asked:

I recently joined the navy. My current job is EM(electrician’s mate). I will be 2 classes short from having my BBA in accounting and Financing before I go to basic training, since the school is online, I plan to complete the Bachelor’s degree after “A” school.

My questions are, because I wil be really close to having my bachelor’s should I change my rating to PS, since it is more related to the degree I will have?

What is the contingent in the rank PS? Are there a lot of people doing these jobs?Would this make me getting rank or OCS harder. If not, would the fact that I have a degree related to the rank stand me out compared to every one else?

If I do not change to PS and maintain EM, will my education officer, when I am assigned a base allow me to finish my degree even though there is nothing to do with electricity?

In case I decide not to follow carreer in the NAVY(I doubt it), would the PS job help me with my BBA in Accouting and Finan

Do aircraft carriers normally have SEALs on board, plus why do deck personnel wear camouflage pants?

pschroeter asked:

I’m watching Carrier on PBS and wonder why some personnel wear camouflage pants, I thought Navy wore blue, wearing camo at sea doesn’t make sense to me.
I’ve always wonder if carriers routinely had SEALs on board, but now that I think about it it would limit their training opportunities.
