From my quick survey on Google, it looks like you need some specialized knowledge and training for VoIP. It's one of those 'convergence' technologies that require a good understanding of several technologies- like Internet Protocol, Telephone systems, networking and all the bits that get them to talk to each other.

I'd check the site I've linked to below- it might help you decide if this field is for you or not.
