How to Implement Communation in Stubborn Company?

the_dragyness asked:

I’m new to a company and working as a lower mid-level manager. I was brought onto the team to accomplish a big task, however. I am to create a technical consulting team using personnel who have always worked as support personnel.

I have experience with this in smaller companies and have been very successful. Where there was no communication, I was able to work with the right people to modify the business process to enable good cross-functional communication that was a real boost in the quality of our services and financially beneficial to the company.

I was recently hired by a VERY large corp for whom I relocated. I have a highly skilled team who I know will be great consultants if their skills are cultivated. I can do this. However, communication in this company is non-existent! NO ONE talks to each other. I contact the “right” people (sales, legal, mgmt) to discuss what needs to be done and they may or may not show up. I’ve tried talking one-on-one with people but it’s a sieve.
Has anyone come across this type of business culture? I mean, this is BAD. They don’t even have templates for their contracts (though I finally found some after trying for 2 mos). I worked with another very large corp many years ago and it was NOTHING like this. There was some communication at least.

Is there a way to overcome this? There is also a very strict hierarchy. I can’t go above my mgr and he can’t go above his. I’ve made noise, but most people it seems come to work, blend into the woodwork, and collect a check. I REALLY want to succeed here since I relocated.

Something is really broken with this company. What can I do as low woman on the totem pole to fix it?????????
This company has over 50,000 employees. Opening up the directory and email list won’t get me far, unfortunately. Besides, they don’t have a common email system or a common calendar system.

Should I get legal council / file a claim with the EEOC because I was fired from my job?

JoRita asked:

I was fired from my job while in the middle of a human resourses investigation dealing with a harrasment/retailiation claim I made. My boss listed tradies to work the cause of my termination, but never consulted with me in regards to the claim I took up with HR. I think the termination is due to the claim more so than the tardies, but I did have tardies. The VP of Operations (male) did the firing by himself without any one else present in the office and our HR personnel were out of town.He also did not give me an exit interview only 5 min of why they decided to fire me (multiple tardies) and then walked me out of the building. He did not tell me about my insurance, PTO time, or my 401k. It was so quick he didn’t even make sure to collect my company credit card or laptop. I don’t understand the reasons behind why it had to happen so quickly or why HR was not involved. How should one proceed?
Thanks for comments so far. We were recently (aug. 06) aquired by another company who does not have a company wide handbook. They like to handle things as situational issues so there is no broad policy to be followed by all. I have worked in this position for the company almost 3 years and was informed that as long as I worked my 40hrs a week I was fine (of which I normally work 40+). There are many other employed there who are tardy. This can be proven by printing out time card info. I worked in accounts payable / payroll so I had access and saw many others clock in and out times.

l s asked:

A timeless lesson on how consultants can make a difference for an organization.

Last week, we took some friends out to a new restaurant, and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket.

It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I noticed he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket.

Then I looked around saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets.

When the waiter came back to serve our soup I asked, “Why the spoon?”

“Well, “he explained, “the restaurant’s owners hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.”

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he was able to replace it with his spare. “I’ll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.”

I was impressed. I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter’s fly. Looking around, I noticed that all the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So before he walked off, I asked the waiter, “Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?”

“Oh certainly!” Then he lowered his voice. “Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also found out that we can save time in the restroom. By tying this string to the tip of you know what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39 percent.

I asked “After you get it out, how do you put it back?”

“Well,” he whispered, “I don’t know about the others, but I use the spoon.”

Law Enforcement?

October 21st, 2008

tam_cam05 asked:

Law enforcement administrators use a variety of management styles to set policies and make decisions. In some instances, an immediate decision is required and an authoritative type of style is utilized. In others, more time is available in which to make decisions and a more deliberate approach is possible.

Consider the following:

Due to the recent terrorist attacks in London where four individuals attempted to bomb public transit locations, the police chief has decided to position officers at the public transit stations in your city. The officers are to search any bag, purse, briefcase, and backpack of all passengers. The police chief made that decision immediately after the news of the London incident appeared and did not consult with anyone before issuing the order.

Discuss the management style used in making this decision. Discuss whether you agree with this decision. Remember, almost all public safety decisions of this type involve other entities, many of them private businesses. Address the following issues: Was this a good decision? Was there time to consult with other agencies and personnel before implementing this? Is this an appropriate time to make a unilateral decision, or should more reflection be undertaken before exercising this option?

I wonder what will happen in the world now Russia has invaded Georgia? (Kind of long question)

October 10th, 2008

Alexi The One Of Metal asked:

Do we have on our hands the proper ingredients for the making of World War III?
“Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century,” the president said in a televised statement from the White House, calling on Moscow to sign on to the outlines of a cease-fire as the Georgian government has done.

“The Russian government must reverse the course it appears to be on and accept this peace agreement as a first step toward solving this conflict,” Bush said, adding that he is deeply concerned that Russia, which Georgian officials say has effectively split their country in two, might bomb the civilian airport in the capital of Tbilisi. - Yahoo! News

Why is all of this happening now? I thought Russia was a neutral country anymore since the Soviet USSR has been dissolved or so we thought? From what I gather the United States, Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan spoke in a conference call, during which they noted that Georgia had agreed to a cease-fire and wanted to see Russia sign on immediately.

Russia has been successful in splitting the country of Georgia in two and for what? With all of Europe, Japan, and the U.S. angry does this unexpected conflict spell war to be held with Russia now? So far I know that Russia is still a communist country and one of the few, while Georgia is a western-like democratic country. So why would Russia be picking on the free nation that borders. The last time Russia invaded a country it was Afghanistan in 1979 and eleven years before that in 1968 Czechoslovakia. Is Russia trying to expand? I have nothing against the country what so ever I’m just confused on all this out break of war, and it seems that the whole world is just wanting to go to war around all at the same time, maybe because they see other countries doing it and thinks that it’s OK I’m only assuming when it surely is not OK.

Didn’t Russia have to consult the United Nations - NATO before they decided to invade Georgia in the first place because from what I’ve gathered it’s just been a surprise thing that the U.N. - NATO had no prior knowledge of. If Russia does not head President Bush’s warning to back down what would become of this crisis?

As read in the news: “The U.S. Embassy in Georgia has distributed an initial contribution of $250,000 in humanitarian relief to victims of the fighting and is providing emergency equipment to people in need, although those supplies would run out later Monday, the department said.

The Pentagon said it had finished flying some 2,000 Georgian troops back home from Iraq on C-17 aircraft at Georgia’s request.

It said it had informed the Russians about the flights before they began in order to avoid any mishaps, but Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin harshly criticized the step, saying it would hamper efforts to resolve the situation by reinforcing Georgian assets in a “conflict zone.”

Wood rejected the criticism, saying: “We’re not assisting in any conflict.”

Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman said the U.S. flew the Georgians out of Iraq as part of a prior agreement that transport would be provided in case of an emergency.” - Yahoo! News

Does this mean that Russia thinks we’ve betrayed them through the action of the prior agreement to Georgia that transport would be provided in a case of an emergency?

I hope the United States doesn’t declare war on Russia in the defense of Georgia because our Military is already sped thin to it’s maximum limit. If war is called on to Russia but the United States does this mean our country will be taken more people like myself with RE-3P reentry codes? Will a draft be in affect since there is not enough Military Personnel especially in the United States Marine Corps, and the United States Army, and possibly the United States Navy?

I mean I’m trying to join the military again but every day gives me a new reason to rethink this decision because I really don’t want to go to war with any Russian’s. I have no quarrel’s with Russia except for the part were innocent Georgian civilian life has already been lost to the greedy, lustful, and hateful business of useless warfare. So I guess I’d help support a fellow country that adopted the democratic way of life, or freedom.

But for what cost of human life must be payed before people realize that war is nothing but a tool to be profited from? As asked in the beginning is this the proper ingredients for World War III?

I can’t wait to read the opinions of others from all over the world on this matter. Thanks for the time taken to read this.
To add details from the first answer the first born of my family is married with children and has to blown out knee’s and can’t meet weight standards of the U.S. Army as he already served and is unable to provide further service. So in a hypothetical sense if the U.S. joined a war against Russia while maintaining the war in Iraq and a draft would I the 2nd born be drafted since I am not married and without children?

This is merely a hypothetical sub-question to the main question.

The main question still remains unanswered can’t wait to read more opinoins.
